Her mother stood at the water’s edge, looking up at the mountains.

Sanaz turned and smiled at her.

She scrambled to her feet.

She reached out, to take her mother’s hand.

Sanaz stepped backwards, into the river.

I need you. Don’t go.

Her mother smiled, then turned, and sank slowly into the water.
